Making breastmilk jewellery is a bit of a dark art in that nobody ever reveals exactly how they make it. 

For all of you amazing breastfeeding mamas out there, I wanted to give you an overview of how your jewellery is made. I can do this without revealing the secret sauce, but still giving you enough information to understand the process. 

It took me a good 12 months to figure out how to make breastmilk jewellery. I tried a lot of different methods, watched a lot of youtube videos, read a lot of blogs and even had a workshop with a resin jewellery expert. The truth is, it takes a lot of trial and error, frustration and crossed fingers to find your formula. But I now have a trusted method that produces beautiful results. 

Your Breastmilk

It all starts with your magical breastmilk. Once you place an order, we send a milk kit and ask you to post back 5mls of milk. Yes we really do only need 5mls to make a breastmilk jewellery piece, and have spare for safe keeping! 

Your milk can be fresh or frozen. It also doesn’t really matter how old it is either. Once we receive your milk, we pop it in the freezer until we are ready to process it. We try to batch process milk every 10 days. 

Processing your breastmilk

When it’s time, we take your milk from the freezer and allow it to defrost. Next we heat the milk up to kill off any bugs and then add two different preservatives. These preservatives ensure that the milk does not go mouldy. We continue to heat your milk and it slowly becomes a paste like consistency. At this stage we remove it from the heat and leave it aside in a warm environment to fully dry for around 7 days. 

Setting your breastmilk

When it is time to set your item of jewellery, I head to my studio space with your milk. I grind down the paste to form a fine powder. The breastmilk powder is mixed with a tiny bit of white iridescent powder to enhance the pearlescent finish. I then mix the powders into a UV Polymer resin, pour into your item and set under a UV light.  And voila your item is complete. 

Every breastmilk jewellery artist has their own method. Some use UV resin, some don't. Some set directly into a jewellery item and some use a mould. Some like to add colours and some prefer a natural finish. That is what makes every brand’s style unique!
